HOKUSAI MANGA BUTOH “So Zo Ro”
What is BUTOH?
Butoh was born in Japan in the 1960s. As the reaction against the imported modern dance, Butoh dancers focused on their body and mind influenced by rural culture. This attitude established a unique body philosophy and Butoh keeps attracting people all over the world.
What is "Hokusai Manga"?
It is an illustrated instruction book by the ukiyoe artist Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai's masterpiece "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji"(富嶽三十六景) is one of his most famous works, and his name is widely known throughout the world. Hokusai described his "Hokusai Manga" as a rambling depiction of things as they occur to him. It contains poeple's life, animals, nature, ghost, spirits etc. almost everything in the world. Unlike today's manga, Hokusai's works were drawn without continuity. The first edition was published in 1814 and continued to be published.
What is "HOKUSAI MANGA BUTOH"?
Hokusai Katsushika's "Hokusai Manga," which portrays the everyday lives of Edo's common people, continues to fascinate people worldwide. Inspired by Hokusai's ability to capture these ordinary scenes, I wanted to create Butoh dance pieces that also reflect the everyday life of the city.
The neighborhoods of Mukojima and Kyoshima in Sumida, where I conducted research for this Butoh project, caught my attention as I wandered the streets. I found a rich, vibrant landscape where factories, public bathhouses, and traditional tenement houses (nagaya) were deeply intertwined with people’s daily lives. These sights, blending old and new, inspired my work. Yet, alongside this charm, there is a noticeable push toward redevelopment, driven by the pursuit of modern convenience.
This is leading to the loss of historical buildings, which threatens to erase the character and individuality of the town. With the Hokusai Manga Butoh Project, we hope to offer people an opportunity to rediscover the unique beauty of Sumida and reflect on its fading uniqueness before it disappears.

Just as Hokusai Katsushika created Hokusai Manga, capturing the lives of the people in Edo, we create our Butoh works by closely observing everyday lives.
Our past performances include HOKUSAI MANGA BUTOH (2022), inspired by the work of factory craftsmen, and Dancing SENTO (2023), which drew on scenes from public bathhouses. This year, as a culmination, we’ve added the life within tenement houses to these motifs.
During my research on tenement life, I spent time exploring the Kyojima area, where there always seems to be someone at the end of each narrow alleyway.
The word So-zo-ro (漫ろ) means "without purpose." I appreciate this sense of aimlessness—it’s a freedom from control or intention. When I wander, pausing to watch a beautiful sunset, I feel the vast flow of life connecting us beyond words.
This performance marks the third year of the HOKUSAI MANGA BUTOH Project, and we are grateful for your presence at this milestone. Thank you for sharing this moment with us.
What is “Goshu Ondo(江州音頭)”?
The “Goshu Ondo(江州音頭)” is a Bon dance song that originated in the country of Omi (present-day Shiga Prefecture(滋賀県)).
It is danced to a long story in seven syllables recited by an ondo-taker. The roots of Goshu Ondo can be traced back to the Bon dance songs of the area east of Lake Biwa(琵琶湖), which gradually became a form of entertainment based on the rites performed by mountain ascetics.
The original Goshu Ondo “Sumida River” performed this time is a modern adaptation of the Umewaka(梅若伝説)legend, which tells the story of the journey from Lake Biwa in distant Shiga to the Sumida River in Tokyo, and is a new ondo with lyrics that also incorporate the scenery of present-day Sumida, which is the highlight of the story.

Farmers like us
They cultivated the fields, sow the seeds, and the flowers bloom
Fruit grows in the midst of the flowers
They reap and harvest, and put them into squares
And how many stones, how many tons, how many squares, how many volumes etc.
We packed them in bales, tied them with rough ropes, and carried them on our backs
Put them in a large cart
Then they would be pulled by oxen and driven to an oil merchant.
Then they would take it to the oil store.
At the oil store, they hang it over the shimeki, and choo-choo!
What a frame for a song!
One or two raindrops on the roof
The oil that I squeezed and dripped

They buy one or two cups of it
And to the gods, we give the light and clasp our hands together and say
